2017 Dulles Day 5k/10k On the Runway

The Dulles Runway 5k/10k has SOLD OUT. There are no additional entries being accepted. There are no transfers or refunds at this time. Thank you for your interest and we hope to see you in 2018!

The Dulles Day 5k/10k on the Runway is back for 2017! Celebrating 5 Amazing years running on the Runway!

Join the Dulles Community on Saturday, September 23, for the best running experience in the area by running a 5k or 10k on one of the runways at Dulles Airport!  

This is your opportunity for the flattest, fastest course in the area. The full length portion of the runway will be closed off for runners to experience a flat, fast course and a unique look at the airport grounds, something you do not get to do every day! Run past planes and along the actual landing strip on this certified looped course.

 

All race proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Virginia, the Committee for Dulles Community Outreach, and the Washington Airports Task Force, all 501c3 nonprofit organizations closely affiliated with Dulles Airport.  

 

When: Saturday, September 23, 2017. The 5k will start at 7:30 am and the 10k will start at 7:40 am 

Course: The event will feature both a 5k and a 10k. The 10k will run the entire length of the runway! Both races are flat and fast.

All runners must be able to complete the chosen course and be off the airstrip by 9:00 am, so that the runway can be reopened for aircraft traffic. 

Only registered runners will be allowed on the race course. Spectators will be allowed at start/finish line area!

There will be water stations available along the course.

Registration Fee: Sign up early! There is a limit of 2,500 runners for this event and we expect it to sell out again this year. 

·         5k: $30 per participant until July 8; $35 until August 5; $40 until online registration closes September 19, if space is still available. There will be no race day registration. All participants must register online by September 19.

·         10k: $40 per participant until July 8; $45 until August 5; $50 until online registration closes September 19, if space is still available. There will be no race day registration. All participants must register online by September 19.

Swag: Participants registered prior to August 17 will be guaranteed a 2017 Dulles Day 5k/10k Technical Shirt. All others will be given shirts on a first-come first-serve basis.  All finishers will receive a one-of-a-kind Finishers Medal!

Celebrating 5 years! The Dulles Day 5k/10k on the Runway is celebrating 5 funfilled years! For all of those who have been with us since the beginning and will be running your 5th Dulles Day 5k/10k on the Runway, we will have a special commemorative goodie for you at packet pick up!
 

Awards: Top male and top female for 10k will each receive a pair of round-trip tickets from United Airlines that are good for anywhere in the continental United States that United flies, plus a weekend stay for 2 at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott!!! Top male and top female for the 5k will each receive a ticket from United Airlines, also good for anywhere in the continental United States, plus a weekend stay for 2 at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott!  Additional awards will be given to the top 2 male and female finishers for each race in the following age groups: 18 and under; 19-30; 31-40; 41-50; 51-60; 61 and over; and top wheelchair finisher. All awards must be claimed within 2 weeks of the conclusion of the race. 

 

Packet Pick up: Packets will be available to be picked up at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott (45020 Aviation Dr, Dulles, VA 20166) on Thursday, September 21 from 11 am -4 pm and Friday, September 22 from 2 pm -7 pm. Packet pick up will also be on-site race day morning starting at 6:30 am. You must pick up your packet at one of the designated packet pick up times. Packets will not be mailed after the race.  

Q: “Can someone else pick up my race packet on my behalf?”

A: Yes. Please make sure your friend has your name and bib number handy for the packet pickup staff. 

Bag Drop: A bag drop will be available near the starting line. Please use the bag given out during packet pick up for the bag drop. We will be writing race numbers on the bags when left at the bag drop. All bags and backpacks will be subject to inspection. Please note: No weapons are permitted. 

Photos: Free high resolution race photos will be available for download from the Potomac River Running Flash Frame page. Keep an eye out for our on-course/finish line photographers and be prepared to strike a pose! 

 

Parking:  Free parking will be provided by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, in the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center parking lot, located south of Washington Dulles International Airport, along Route 28, about 1/2 mile north of the intersection of Routes 28 & 50. Address: 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway, Chantilly, VA 20151. The parking lot will open at 6 am. Please plan to arrive early, as all runners will have to walk through the museum to get out to the starting line. NOTE: The parking lot entrance will close at 8 am, no further admittance will be allowed after that time. The race will start promptly at 7:30 am. 

Security Checkpoint: There will be a security checkpoint for all runners and spectators upon entering the National Air and Space Museum. Please plan accordingly. 


Directions:
 

From Washington, DC and points south: Take I-66 West to Route 28 North (Exit 53B): Travel on Route 28 North for 5.3 miles. Exit at the Air and Space Museum Parkway and follow signs to the Udvar-Hazy Center.  The parking lot will close at 8 am.
From Washington, DC and points north: Take I-495 West (Capital Beltway) to the Dulles Toll Road West (Route 267). Exit the Dulles Toll Road at Route 28 South (Exit 9A) and travel south 3.5 miles. Exit at the Air and Space Museum Parkway and follow signs to the Udvar-Hazy Center. The parking lot will close at 8 am.
Please note that online mapping services may direct you to enter the Udvar-Hazy Center from Route 50. This is not a public entrance. You must enter from Route 28. 
 

 

Post Race Refreshments: The Washington Dulles Marriott will provide post race refreshments. Look for their tent and stop by after the race to refuel!   

 

NOTE: Runners must be able to complete the 5k or 10k in 90 min, so the runway can be reopened for airport traffic. To allow for a few extra minutes, the final 1/2 mile will be on a taxiway. As long as you are beyond the final checkpoint coming off the air strip by 9:00 am you will be permitted to finish...allowing for plenty of time for everyone to finish. 

Strollers (no registration needed for the child in the stroller) and wheelchairs will also be permitted, as long as they can complete the course by 9 am. Because this event will take place on the runway, only registered runners (with/without strollers) will be allowed through the final checkpoint to get onto the course.

Spectators will not be allowed on the course, but are encouraged to cheer for all runners as they complete their race - plan to hang out at the start/finish area to wait for your favorite runner to cross the finish line.
