Help us Make a Difference in the lives of our children. The 5k walk/run is in honor and remembrance of our Principal, Kathy Hwang, who passed away in November 2012. Mrs. Hwang was a lifelong educator, who loved her students at Sanders Corner. One of the most beneficial programs she brought to Sanders Corner was the "Read to the Principal" program, where every student had the opportunity to read, either a book or something they had written, to Mrs. Hwang and in return had their picture hung on the school bulletin board and was given a book of their own to take home. Help us continue to make a difference! Proceeds from the 5k will be used to begin a "Read to the Principal" Program at another Loudoun County Public School and help fund staff development!

In the fall of 2012, just before welcoming the children back for the 2012-2013 school year, Kathy read the following story to the teachers;

"One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it in to the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die." "Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!" After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, "I made a difference for that one!"

This story is meant to remind teachers and parents alike to maintain the vision that each of us are able to make a difference in a child's life, even if it is just one child at a time.
