Celebrating Work Force Diversity and the Employment Potential of Adults with Autism

Introducing: The 3nd annual Tysons Chamber Charity 5K for 2016 benefitting the Organization for Autism Research will be held Sunday, April 24th, at the Tysons Corner Center Mall, Tysons VA. It offers the opportunity for you to showcase your business, demonstrate your support for the Tysons Chamber and business community, and help raise money to support an exciting jobs initiative for adults with autism here in the greater Tysons region. Background: In 2012, the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted the first Tysons Chamber Charity 5K. The intention was to support health and wellness objectives of Tysons Chamber members, promote camaraderie within the Tysons community, and support charity, in this instance, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). In the last two years the Chamber has selected a member charity to be the beneficiary. Last year the honor went to Insight Memory Care Center which focuses on providing a wide range of services to people with Alzheimer's disease and their families.
This Year’s Cause and Purpose: With the race in April and April being National Autism Awareness Month, the Chamber saw the ideal opportunity to support autism and feature the work of the Organization for Autism Research (OAR), most notably its Hire Autism employment initiative. OAR believes that adults with autism can perform successfully in a wide range of jobs, and their skills and work habits can contribute to the bottom line. To that end, OAR developed Hire Autism, a web portal that connects job seekers with autism to employers in need of their skills in a carefully structured and autism-friendly environment. OAR selected the Tysons business community as the ideal location to demonstrate its capabilities as well as the capacity of individuals with autism to find meaningful employment and become valued employees in a variety of area businesses.
About OAR: OAR is a national charity located in Arlington, VA. Its mission is to apply research to the challenges of autism. As part of that mission, OAR is committed to research and programs that enhance life’s opportunities and quality of life for all persons affected by the disorder. To that end, OAR joined the Tysons Chamber in January 2015, expressly to build relationships within the Tysons community and lay the groundwork for its coming adult employment initiative.
